Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speechwriter. Feminist Frequency is a site with video and an online blog on the representation of women in pop media and popular. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic that has received awards for her work, is an activist blogger. She is the founder and executive director of Feminist Frequency an educational, non-profit site that examines the representation of women in popular culture narratives. Aiming to break down the stereotypes that are associated with females in pop culture she also works to highlight issues related to harassment targeted at women as well as other classes of people in the online world. Holding a master's degree in political and social thought at York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaking engagement and has given talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival and the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. When she was a student at the university Sarkeesian was interested in the issues surrounding gender and rights for women at an early stage. She was a young woman with a dream to develop the series of videos on the internet which would explore gender roles in games. In the end, she ended up being the victim of online harassment. The attack did not deter her instead it was a boost to her determination as a feminist media critic. Sarkeesian has been awarded numerous awards for her contribution to the cause of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winner for her work as a media journalist. She also serves as the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organization that explores pop culture gender representations.
